Trumpeter/Composer Walter Henderson is one of Chicago's originals. Sought after as a skilled session man to many jazz ensembles, Henderson has come up with a great debut CD, "Schema," on his "Whist Lip" label. And what a debut is. Knowing his adept trumpet work, I was mildly surprised by his composing and singing ability. On "Schema," Henderson plays to the hilt and rumbles in the R&B quite effectively. Out of the gate is the excellent radio tune, "Uncle Walt," but the kicker is the unique and wonderful version of the '80's hit, "All this love." In his able hands the song becomes a stepper's delight, full of lyrical embellishments and virtuosity. It is a hit in its own right just waiting for the right audience. The title song is a memorable piece where Henderson scats in three varying voices calling to mind the radiance of Betty Carter. On the lovely ballad "From Wherest We've Come," Henderson displays his vocal artistry in an unhurried and urbane fashion that would and should put in the category of "Babyface."

The brother is awesome....................
Chief among trumpeters is the renowned, Walter Henderson. Whose crafted masterful credenzas amaze audiences every time he leans into the microphone. One rarely encounters a comparably accomplished big-band trumpeter who is more interested in turning a poetic phrase, than blasting home a high note.
Hendersons' best work came in ballads, such as "I Remember Clifford" and a robustly contrapuntal version of "On a Clear day You Can See Forever" (in an arrangement by Chicagoan T.S.Galloway).
